Facing deep rebellion from white men in the North and the South, Lincoln chose his words carefully when he delivered the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Lincoln believed that the emancipation of slaves was "an act of justice." This reproduction of Abraham Lincoln's famous speech appears on antiqued parchment in Lincoln's handwriting.

This reproduction includes the entire Proclamation in Lincoln's handwriting given on September 22, 1862.
