The Mishumma Saba are the essence of Kwanzaa and are an essential part of your Kwanzaa table. These are symbolic of the Nguzo Saba, the Seven Principles, the core values which African people are urged to live by in order to rescue and reconstruct their lives. Our Mishumma Saba are hand dipped, are made in the USA and measure: 10”(H) with a 7/8” diameter with a self-fitted end. Each will fit in most standard candle holders. They are unscented. The suggested burn time is 6-8 hours.

  • The Mishumma Saba are seven candles. There are three red, one black and three green candles in a set. They are symbolic of the Nguzo Saba, the Seven Principles, the foundational set of values which African people are urged to live by in order to rescue and reconstruct their lives in their own image and according to their own needs. Each candle represents a principle. The black candle represents Black people, African people throughout the diaspora, and is placed in the center of the Kinara. The red candles represent the struggles of Black people and are placed to the left of the black candle. The Green candles represent the freedom and independence Black people have achieved and continue to seek and are placed to the right of the black candle. The black candle is lit first, for Umoja, and is followed by the closest red candle. The third candle lit is the closest green candle. The remaining candles are lit alternately red, green, red, green.
